Academic Services
LifeWorks Schools is a community working to meet the needs of students struggling with the effects of a multitude of mental health needs. This is accomplished through group counseling, individual counseling, providing a trauma informed environment, as well as intense collaboration with families, mental health and related services. Group counseling occurs on an every other day basis for our students receiving emotional support and once a week for our students who have a diagnosis on the autism spectrum. Group modalities include evidenced based practices that provide psychoeducation into healthy relationships, how to appropriately manage feelings such as anger, social skills, as well as how to cope with negative feelings related to trauma, depression and anxiety.
Individual counseling is provided to students on an as needed basis or by request. Need for individual counseling can be determined by the school counselor, teacher, administrator, outside provider, and/or parents. For any student that has shown an increase in symptoms related to their mental health needs or whom may be having a difficult time due to the many external stressors that face our students, LifeWorks has an enhanced assessment protocol. For students on enhanced assessment, they are seen individually on a routine basis. This can be anywhere from once a week to daily depending on need. In addition, individual counseling can be requested by the student or a family member during any given school day.
The substance abuse and mental health service administration states that more than two thirds of children reported at least one traumatic event before the age of 16. To be able to work effectively with our students we must provide a safe environment with the overall assumption that all of our students have experienced at least one trauma in their young lives. We understand that building a safe environment founded on trust, collaboration, and empowerment is what is needed to foster growth in our students. The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is an evidence based approach that LifeWorks has incorporated across all schools to aid in this mission.
LifeWorks appreciates that having a supportive team assisting our students and their families on a daily basis is critical to their overall success. For that reason, we are continually advocating for the services we believe that are necessary to meet the needs of our students, collaborating with the services that they currently have in place, as well as provide therapeutic support while the students are in school.
